Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT)

Updated: Oct 29

One eye open

Integral Eye Movement Therapy is a brief change work process that generates rapid change in the area of undesired emotional and identity issues.

The techniques used within IEMT will look to answer the question, "How did I learn to feel this way about that?’ It is an exploration of a problem.

The Association for IEMT Practitioners says this:

"In the intricate tapestry of human cognition, our eyes serve as more than just windows to the external world; they are gateways to our deepest psychological structures. The patterns of our gaze, often overlooked, can reveal profound truths about our internal landscapes.

Our memories and imaginations aren't just abstract constructs; they are deeply rooted in the physiological and psychological processes of our being. The way we store and access these memories, the manner in which we visualise our futures, are all intertwined with the dance of our eyes. It's a dance that tells a story, one that's often hidden beneath layers of consciousness.

Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) is not just another therapeutic modality. It's a journey into the very fabric of our psyche. By observing and influencing eye movements, we can tap into the neural pathways that store our most profound emotions and experiences. This isn't merely about alleviating symptoms; it's about confronting the dragons of our past, understanding them, and integrating their lessons into our present."

It's an amazing therapy to have in my toolbox and has created deep change for many of my clients.

IEMT works by addressing the underlying patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaviour that contribute to emotional distress. Our past experiences, particularly those that are traumatic, can create patterns of thinking and behaviour that persist into adulthood and contribute to emotional distress. These patterns can be difficult to change through traditional therapy, as they are often deeply ingrained in our subconscious.

IEMT works by using eye movements to stimulate the brain and create new neural connections that allow for the processing and release of negative emotions and beliefs.

During an IEMT session, I guide you through a series of eye movements while you focus on the issue or memory that is troubling you. These eye movements stimulate the brain and create new connections between different areas of the brain, allowing you to process and integrate the memory and resulting in a reduction of emotional, leading to a reduction in emotional distress.

IEMT also works on emotional imprinting. This occurs when a person stores in their mind a new emotional response to an experience which they then carry forward to use in future experiences.

When a person first experiences negative emotional feelings, they store the memory by thinking, ‘This has happened, it made me unhappy’. If they keep returning to the stored memory they start to move from simply experiencing the feeling of ‘unhappiness’ and begin to create an identity ‘I am an unhappy person’. It is essentially a belief created from experience that drives our future choices and experiences. It can effect the way we experience life.

Emotional imprinting occurs when a person stores in their mind a new emotional response to an experience, which they carry forward and use in future situations, and identity imprinting occurs during lifelong development.

Once an emotion becomes an identity, it can feel a huge part of your life, because we have chosen to take this on and live it. It's there on waking, all through your day until sleep. You carry it like you carry your other identities. I am a Mum or I am a Secretary or I am depressed.

I use IEMT along with compassionate enquiry, deep relaxation techniques and Reiki to support body, mind and Soul. To release, restore, heal and nourish your healing journey and your personal growth.
